What is an acoustic drone detection system?

Sensor(s) (singular or an array of microphones) detect acoustic signals (sound waves), parse them in real-time, and send the results to the server. The information the server receives includes the sensor’s identification, its geographic coordinates, and a timestamp of when the sensor detected the sound waves. The server can instantaneously process the messages received from…

What is graphene?

Figure 1.  An Atomic-Scale Hexagonal Lattice Made of Carbon Atoms (Source:  AlexanderAlUS via Wikimedia Commons). The tight lattice of graphene, combined with its very short carbon bonds (0.142 nm), provides its strength. It is the strongest material ever discovered, boasting an ultimate tensile strength of 130 GPa. Graphene is exceptionally light for its strength, weighing…

An image of hydrogels (translucent, lumpy substance) in a glass dish

What are hydrogels?

There are natural and synthetic polymer hydrogels. Natural hydrogel polymers include polysaccharides, polynucleotides, and polypeptides. These polymers are particularly beneficial because they are abundant in nature, biodegradable, and inexpensive. Some examples of natural hydrogels include collagen, silk fibroin, and hyaluronic acid. Synthetic polymer hydrogels differ from natural polymers because they have chemical and physical properties…

Qualification and Certification of Powder Bed Fusion Additively Manufactured Components

Additive manufacturing (AM) is, and has been, a technology gaining traction for replacement parts and optimally designed structures throughout industry. However, with the lack of military or U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)-approved qualification and certification (Q&C) processes (outside of NASA standards), the utilization of AM throughout the Services and DoD certainly is not as trusted when compared to traditional manufacturing processes. Due to the lack…
