*** Given the rapidly-evolving situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the CDC and DoD directives to restrict travel and large gatherings, a Short Course on LFT&E – Spring 2020 has been postponed. We will reschedule the short course for later in 2020 (date and location TBD). ***
Taught by former Director of Live Fire for DOT&E, Mr. James F. O’Bryon, this 3-day, intensive short course takes a multifaceted look at the legislation, directives, requirements, preparation, and execution of Live Fire Testing and Evaluation (LFT&E)—a statutory requirement for most major defense acquisition programs since 1987.
More than 99% of the 1,100 civilian and military personnel, engineers (both contractors and government), test planners, vulnerability/lethality analysts, M&S developers, instrumentation technicians, program managers, test range operators, and related analysts who completed this training gave the following rating:Â “I would recommend this training to my coworkers.”
DISCUSSIONS COVER:
- A brief history of LFT&E legislation
- Joint Live Fire Program
- LFT&E candidacy
- Preparation of live fire test plans in the context of the test and evaluation master plans (TEMPs)
- The role of modeling and simulation in LFT&E
- Pre-test predictions and test assessment
- Congressional and DoD reporting requirements
- The role of the LFT&E waiver from full-up system-level testing (including its purpose, implementation, and historical precedents)
- The role of battle damage and repair in LFT&E
- Test article realism
- LFT&E test facilities
Land and air system vulnerability and lethality for both conventional and unconventional weapons will be discussed; however, sea systems will also be addressed. Heavy emphasis will be placed on LFT&E lessons learned and common misunderstandings regarding LFT&E program execution. The course includes lectures, photos, hardware demonstrations, video clips of LFT&E events, group discussions, and exercises. A realistic case study is also included to enable class groups to apply the concepts presented. Ample time will also permit productive give-and-take between students and instructor. This course has been updated to reflect recent congressional impact on the reorganization and reporting of LFT&E.
COURSE INCLUDES:
- Lessons learned from live fire testing the survivability and lethality of air, land, and sea systems to achieve better survivability design, increased weapons lethality, casualty reduction, battle damage repair, M&S adequacy, LFT&E strategy preparation, assessment of both ballistic and non-ballistic weapons effects (lasers, RF, DEW, cyber, AI, etc.).
- A new LFT&E system oversight list and Pentagon and IDA points of contact
- A full 350-page updated syllabus distributed to each student
- A hardcopy textbook on aircraft survivability
- An 800-page book on lessons learned from the 100+ systems already completing LFT&E
- More than 30 short videos of various LFT&E testing
- 2.4 CEUs awarded by INCOSE to students who successfully complete this unique training
