Prototyping and Early Research and Development

DSIAC was asked for publications related to research and development prototyping at lower technology readiness levels not associated with rapid prototyping, rapid fielding, innovation, or experimentation. DSIAC subject matter experts (SMEs) recommended sources where they conduct prototyping in support of U.S. government and Department of Defense efforts. Related to our research efforts, we were asked to review a scholarly paper written by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Office of Strategy Management on prototyping in the acquisition cycle, especially with early research and development activities (6.1/6.2 funding area). DSIAC SMEs reviewed the report and provided feedback, such as a suggestion to address areas related to leading acquisitions in an inherently risk adverse environment and the inherent difference between invention and innovation. In addition, the inquirer was pointed to a U.S. Army article “Evolving Innovation,” co-authored by the DSIAC SME, that won the 2014 U.S. Army article of the year award for additional insight.
