What human factors research has been done on infrared display technology, specifically regarding white hot versus black hot polarity preferences?

DSIAC was asked to perform human factors research into infrared displays utilizing a polarity switch allowing users to choose between “white hot” and “black hot” functionality. The inquirer wanted to know if there had been human factor studies that discussed why one polarity may be preferred over the other in certain scenarios or by certain individuals. The inquirer also wanted to know whether polarity preferences could be due display screen technology abilities in presenting pure black or white images. Research articles on this topic found in open sources and the DTIC R&E Gateway were collected, compiled, and delivered to the inquirer, along contact information for multiple subject matter experts on this subject.
