DSIAC contacted Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to discuss their efforts related to the following technologies: HiSentinel stratospheric balloon and Tactical Aerobotic Launch System (TALS) research and development efforts High Altitude Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) Mission Concept of Operations (CONOPS) Scenario modeling Support to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Adaptable Lighter-Than-Air (ALTA) program and Stratospheric Optical Autocovariance Wind Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) (Strat-OAWL) made by Ball Aerospace that could allow devices in the ALTA balloon program to spot wind speed and direction from a great distance and then make the necessary adjustments to stay in one spot. DSIAC compiled and delivered multiple briefings on the development efforts and updated cost estimates to mature those programs, reported on the independent research and development (IRAD) effort, and provided information on SwRI’s support to the DARPA ALTS program to the inquirer.
